The National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T) are designed to improve learning, enrich professional practice, and provide positive models for students, colleagues, and the community. There are five standards for teachers to achieve and each is composed of four indicators. These standards include: the Ability for Teachers to Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity, to be able to Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments, to Model Digital-Age Work and Learning, to Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility, and to Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership. I believe that I am proficient in the majority of these standards, although I am sure that I can make improvements.
In the Facilitating and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity, I need to strengthen the second indicator, which states that teachers should engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources. Sometimes I get so bogged down with getting my students ready for the Ohio Achievement Test that I forget to inspire student creativity. This problem must be addressed for me to be become more proficient at my job. My Goals and Actions for strengthening this area are to begin to utilize the internet to search for examples of “real-world” issues and to include these in my reading and writing lessons. I can then locate and utilize the technological tools needed to promote critical thinking skills and creativity in my students. I will Monitor my progress through “in action” and “on action” reflection. With “in action” monitoring, I can continually think about and modify my lessons and how I am presenting them. “On action” asks me to reflect upon what I have done and think about what happened, why it happened, and how it will influence my future teaching or behaviors (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2009). I see this process as a form of Evaluation, so I will treat it as such a component in my GAME plan. I realize that certain authors and experts recommend professional portfolios but keeping one has never been my preference or style.
The second strand to strengthen is the Promotion and Modeling of Digital Citizenship and Responsibility. I am weakest in the first indicator which requires teachers to participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning. Of all the NETS-T indicators, this is my weakest and it is due to my stubbornness and type-B personality. I prefer to work alone on most projects and in my profession. I rely upon myself to get things done and I happily accept the credit or the blame. Collaborating with others is not my strength or desire and this is both strength and weakness. My Goal is to become more involved in our school’s social and technological network. I use a lot of technology in my classroom, but I rarely share my thoughts, ideas, and teaching techniques with others. My Actions will include an increase in communication through weekly staff development and grade-level meetings. I will Monitor my progress and Evaluation through “on action” reflection and by creating a network folder with ideas and tools for my colleagues to utilize. I am hopeful that branching out will help me to improve as a person and as a professional.

Hello Michael,
ReplyDeleteI can certainly identify with the struggle you face getting students ready for the Ohio Achievement test, we are faced with something similar in Massachusetts. The preparation is so time consuming that we have little time for anything else. The goal is to inspire student creativity and I think you are on the right track. You mentioned utilizing “the internet to search for examples of “real-world” issues and to include these in my reading and writing lessons”. That is a great idea! I would take it one step further and have your students be responsible for the creation of a multimedia presentation on some of these issues. Multimedia tools such as spreadsheet software, web research, organization of graphics, and data collection help to engage students in a deeper level of thought. Pitler, Hubbell, Kuhn, and Malenoski, (2007) suggest “by engaging students in a complex mental process, it will enhance their overall understanding of the content” (p.202). I have found that group work is ideal for this type of project providing the groups are monitored to ensure everyone is participating.
I enjoyed reading your blog and hope my comments can be of some help to you. Good luck with the remainder of the course. Check out my blog if you have a chance and let me know what you think.
Thanks,
John M

Collaboration is very important for our student and educators. Our principal has mandated that conduct weekly meetings with our team to plan and share our lesson plans for the upcoming week. We also post lesson plans on a common network drive. This allows any staff member to pull up our plans and build on the concepts in other areas. For example, third grade is currently studying our science sound and motion unit The PE and music teacher are also using these concepts in their class. The students are receiving multiple modes of teaching in diverse styles of learning abilities.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to real world issues learners can become more engaged when using a technology component. In the video resources: “Enriching Content Area Learning Experiences with Technology, Part 2” (Laureate, 2009) one of the teachers mentioned how she refers to the Internet to compare the history events of the past to connect to current events. She found that comparing the two in similarities allowed students to connect to the material using current real world events. This promoted critical thinking and creativity in the way students would go about solving the today’s problems. It may not be your style to keep a professional portfolio to monitor and reflect on the effectiveness of the lesson so maybe making notes on your copy of your lesson plans either electronically or hand written in the margins may help in keeping track of effectiveness.
ReplyDeleteIn an effort to strive towards Promotion and Modeling of Digital Citizenship and Responsibility collaborating with colleagues during staff meetings and professional development is a great start! Perhaps starting a teacher’s blog will be another way to reach out. It also be advantageous to start a wiki where various content areas like language arts and math can have specific pages dedicated to information that teachers can share that includes valuable websites. Many teachers I have found will communicate even more when it is done in a collaborative or social networking format with technology.
Thanks for the comments everyone. I will definitely give them consideration. Hopefully a couple of them will work, but my main problem lies in my thinking and personal philosophy. I guess it is time to adapt and change a little.
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel about the interaction. The Principal and Assistant Principal are constantly coming to me asking me if I am planning with the other science teacher. Although we teach the same concepts we are very much different teacher. I am using as much technology as I have available to me, while he had the SmartBoard removed from his room. I have worked with him to utilize some of the more basic technology that we use but it has been challenging.
ReplyDeleteMike,
ReplyDeleteAdaptation and change is never easy especially when there are obstacles in the school district in which one works. The best advice I ever had at a technology workshop is to try just one or two new technology modalities in a year. This is not only to avoid the feeling of being overwhelmed but to also allow yourself time to build confidence and skill with the technology tool.
